How Cohousing Transforms Family Life

What if raising a family didn’t have to feel so isolating? A recent article from NPR highlights how cohousing is helping families find the support they need—whether it’s a neighbor stepping in to help, kids growing up with built-in playmates, or parents feeling less alone in the challenges of raising children.

For members of Daybreak Cohousing in Oregon, Rachel and Chris Damgen, cohousing made all the difference. “We would not have had a third child if we hadn't been here," Rachel shares, explaining how knowing neighbors were always there to lend a hand gave them the confidence to grow their family.

Beyond just helping parents, cohousing creates deep intergenerational bonds. Older neighbors become like surrogate bubbies and zaydes, passing down family traditions, playing games with the kids, and forming meaningful connections that enrich everyone’s lives. In a world where generations are often disconnected, cohousing brings people together in a way that feels natural and fulfilling.

At Berkeley Moshav, we’re bringing this same vision to life with a Jewish twist! We're creating a vibrant cohousing community where families, kids, and individuals of all ages can thrive with the support of neighborly bonds rooted in Jewish culture and values.

Serving Chesed, One Pot of Soup at a Time

20 members of Berkeley Moshav rolled up their sleeves and came together at a Member’s home to make soup for our unhoused neighbors. In just one afternoon, the group prepared enough soup to feed 120 people through the Berkeley-based grassroots organization Consider the Homeless.

At Berkeley Moshav—a Jewish cohousing community under development—we live out the Jewish values of chesed (kindness), tzedakah (charity), and tikkun olam (repairing the world). What better way to do so than gathering as a community and sharing warmth with a bowl of soup on a chilly day?
